Genealogy Schmnealogy!

I don't get it! What's the point of all this genealogy, ancestry stuff?

Maybe I'm just dense (okay, no comments from the Peanut Gallery), but how does learning about our ancestors make ANY difference in us?

I am me! I'm not in anyway influenced by what my great, great, great Grandpa did.

For instance, if my great x 3 grandpa was hanged as a hoss thief, will that make ME a hoss thief?

I don't even know where to find a hoss, in this area!

Conversely, if my great x 3 grandpa was the Duke Of Earl, should I go 'round acting like royalty? I don't think that would go over with my friends!

I know that according to the Ancestry.com ads, if you find out your ancestor was last of the Mohicans, you HAVE to start dressing like a Mohican and learning Mohican traditional dances! REALLY?

You may be only 1/80th Mohican, like Liz (Pocahontas) Warren, but focus in on that tiny little ancestor, because you think Indians (Native Americans) are cool!

What about the Armenians in your genealogical history? The Polish? The Russians? The African Americans?

Don't you have to give them equal time?

Imagine all the wardrobe changes you'll have to make to cover all the different ancestors in your genealogical record!

It matters not one iota (not the hurricane) to me, what my long dead ancestors did. It doesn't even interest me!

How does that effect me? Is it something folks want to brag about?

Even if your ancestor was Albert Einstein, what do YOU have to brag about? You had nothing to do with the Theory Of Relativity!

Like I mentioned, I don't get it! Even if I got some traits from my diverse ancestors, how does it help me to know who gave me those traits?

Please let me know what you get out of that genealogical stuff, and I'll try and understand.

Thanks!!
